The main property of the female breasts is to provide the life in the form of breastmilk to the infant. For this unique purpose, there are mammary glands that have been developed by nature to nurture and nourish delicate baby since anything other than the breastmilk is quite difficult to digest for it. It is very essential that the mother must learn a correct way of suckling the newborn and also to maintain proper breasts’ hygiene once the feed is over. This would keep the breasts clean and prepared for next feed for the newborn and also regain the breasts to the original shapes and sizes once the infant is weaned.
It is quite essential to provide vitamin or mineral supplements to the lactating mothers. In some of the cases wherein the mother is healthy and the infant is full termed, there is no requirement to give heavy vitamin supplements to the mother or to the infant for at least 3 months after delivery since breastmilk itself is enough to supply abandon quantity of essential minerals to the infant.
When the mother got any vitamin or mineral deficiency or she is undernourished, she must require taking supplements. The mother might show deficiency of vitamin B12 if she is vegetarian. Such vitamins are not only important for breastmilk but they also give strength the breasts that is much needed during pregnancy period. For a supply of Vitamin D, it is better for the mother to be under the sunlight for some time each day. In case the mother lacks of adequate amount of Vitamin B1, the infant can suffer from dangerous symptoms. The problem is quite rare but right medical attention is indeed required.
Lactation, as depicted in medical encyclopedia nomenclature, is the natural process of secreting the milk from the mammary glands of the breasts. The sole purpose is to provide life/nourishment to the infant. Such process in human beings is known as breastfeeding and the biological procedure of generating milk and getting it out is through the portals of the nipples. Even just born baby has natural sucking reflex through which the milk, secreted from the breasts is sucked. Therein, the breasts are the sole natural source of nourishment for the baby and so, it becomes all-important to take breast care for lactating mothers.
When the woman successfully conceives and becomes pregnant, during the period her third month, there would be drastic biological changes in the body including the bosoms since there will be production of some hormones that are very essential in the future for the producing the breastmilk. The breast engorges with blood and becomes highly tender as there are some hormonal changes and few of them are freshly produced. These hormones stimulate the system through which, development of the milk ducts take place within the front-organs of the mother. Of these hormones, each one plays a crucial role in the women's ability manufacturing the milk for the infant upon its birth.
Appropriate breast care for lactating mothers would make them capable producing enough amount of the breastmilk so that she feeds the newborn up to satisfactory level. The hormone progesterone encourages the mammary glands and prepares the breasts to both produce sufficient milk with better quality.
One can take care for breasts during lactation following simple steps – Keep the breasts and nipples clean and dry since this keep them to become sore and infected. One should also not use chemically made soap cleaning the nipples and areola as this may make them sore and cracked, instead, go for some herbal soap preferably containing Neem, a natural antibacterial. Another important thing to breast care for lactating mother is not to soak the nipples in water or let the nipples stay moist. This is because it leads to cracked or some infection of the nipples and hence, she should wash the bosoms and also the nipples with plain lukewarm water.
