Understanding Your Partner Better
Mutual understanding plays a very important role in relationships. It includes understanding the attitude, thinking process, thoughts, characteristics and personality of the partner. One way of understanding is when the partner explains to you his feelings, emotions, complexities, thoughts etc. At another level understanding means knowing what the partner is going through without him having to explain it or tell you.
Sometimes understanding comes naturally among couples as they may be people with similar temperament, brought up in similar circumstances, may have experienced similar events in life, or may have the same level of emotional, spiritual or intellectual aptitude. Recognizing the pulse of the partner may become simpler then.
In some cases, partners come from varied backgrounds, may not possess the same emotional and intellectual quotient, may come from contrasting walks of life, may have difference in perception towards various things, and therefore a lot more effort and open mindedness may be required to develop understanding of each other.
Be a good listener. Do not be just keen to talk about yourself. Bringing about the participation of the partner is equally important if you have to know him. Listen, assimilate and introspect on what the partner has told you. This will help you to know the deeper meaning and hidden feelings of the partner.
Do not be judgmental. Suspend your biases and prejudices when you are with the partner. Do not use the common popular benchmarks to understand and rate your partner. If you allow your prejudice to intervene, you may get a distorted and unfair impression about the partner.
Ask and confirm. You need to cross check that you are understanding the partner’s opinion the way he wants you to. It is important to ensure that you are not reading a different meaning into it. Clarify and confirm your inference with him to know if both of you are at par.
