Risks in Live in Relationships
Live-in relationships offer a great deal of freedom, choice, assertiveness and anonymity to the partners. In most cases the partners may not disclose about the relationship, and this may pose a risk especially to women.
In most cases, the families are unaware that their son or daughter is in a live-in relationship. Absence of this knowledge in the family can put the women in a tough situation. She may have to always guard the relationship so that it does not leak out. Even if there is trouble or conflict in the relationship she may not be able to take the assistance of family members for her safety.
There can be cases of abuse or controlling behaviour by men in the relationship. The women may be coerced or persuaded to have a lifestyle that they do not actually prefer but may go along with it, as they may have no other alternative.
In case there is threat or abusive behaviour by the partner, women may not be able to move out of the relationship because of fear of retaliation by the man. She may not be able to ask for assistance from neighbours or immediate social relations, as she may not want to disclose the relationship itself. This state can make her vulnerable to emotional and physical abuse by the man.
Due to unclear legal status of this relationship and due to inadequate safety provisions under law for women in this relationship, women may become victims of abuse. They may suffer financial burdens due to investment in house in which she may not continue to stay, purchasing assets for common usage that may be claimed by the man, or the man not sharing recurring expenses etc.
She may also suffer a lot of social stigma and taboo as many individuals in society may find the relationship illegal and may assume women to be disrespectable and of loose morals.
