Remedies for Sore and Cracked Nipples
Breastfeeding is the way in which a mother and a child bond. Every mother who knows how important breastfeeding is for her baby wants to do it till the time the baby is at least 6 months old. However a lot of new moms have a problem with breastfeeding, and that is because of sore and cracked nipples. There is a slight discomfort initially for every new mother but this thing can persist and can make breastfeeding a dreaded thought.
Here are some ways in which this soreness of nipples can be tackled without having to seek medical help.
Firstly you can apply cold compress to the nipples just before feeding the baby. This will relieve the pain for you. For the cold compress, you can either use a piece of cloth dipped in cold water or you can also used cold used tea bags. These two things are known to have a great effect on the sore nipples.
Start by feeding the baby with the less sore nipple. This will give your sorer nipple to relax before your baby suckles on it. Keep on switching the baby from one breast to another so that both the nipples get enough air.
Thirdly wear a clean and comfortable bra all the time. This will prevent the infection from spreading on the nipples which start healing. Avoid nursing pads and air your breasts for at least 15 minutes everyday.
Never discontinue feeding your baby even when you have sore nipples. It is said that sore nipples heal with frequent nursing. Exposing your breasts initially for 30 seconds and later for a total of 2 to 3 minutes is also advisable.
Applying olive oil or almond oil is helpful in preventing cracked nipples. Using soap can lead to dryness of the nipples, hence restrict the use to a minimum. Creams like Boroline and Boroplus also are helpful while treating cracked and sore nipples.
However the best way to cure a sore or cracked nipple is by applying expressed breast milk over them. This can be done while feeding the baby as well. Express a little milk from the unused breast and apply it on the nipple and let it dry and do the same with the other breast the moment you shift the baby to this breast.
