Reasons for Weight Gain

Weight gain is a condition many people encounter these days. Children tend to get obese due to their access to various junk foods available in the market, and teenagers and adults are affected by desk jobs, sitting for long hours, sedentary lifestyle and pressures of work/exams due to which adequate time is not available for working out.

Gaining weight is easier as we do not know the calories and energy derived by the kinds of food we consume throughout the day. A mere packet of potato chips or wafers can contribute hugely to your calorie count, and if the level of activity you carry out is low the calories start accumulating and weight gain becomes inevitable.

Eating is not the sole reason for weight gain; low level of physical activities either in the form of routine work, exercises, the distances you walk everyday, how busy you keep yourself also matter since these are the processes through which calories are burnt and weight gain can be contained.

Due to lack of time, hectic schedule, tiredness etc we may not be able to devote as much time for physical or fitness activities. Eating schedule may be haphazard; we may eat at odd hours, may not actually give a thought to what we are eating, munch on junk food and may be compelled by temptation or stress to eat high calorie food like chocolate bars, pastries, cheesy items, deep fried spicy items, sweetmeats and so on. In the absence of discipline and lack of any regulation on diet, weight gain becomes the natural outcome.

Some of you may eat fast since you might be bound by time, under stress, or have too many commitments and very less time. By eating fast you do not get the satisfaction of eating and may therefore go through urge or temptation to eat for the rest of the day. Food consumed in haste is also difficult to digest.

Due to hectic schedule, there is a tendency to skip meals during the day and then we try to compensate for it by consuming a large meal at night. This is a faulty approach. The right approach is to take in smaller quantities of meals throughout the day so that you are energized and food also gets easily digested.
