Reasons for Food Craving
Food craving can come out of several internal or external factors. Internal factors could be changes in the hormones, for example, changes brought about during pregnancy may provoke an urge for certain foods like spicy, sour food, for sweets etc.
Craving can also be triggered by stresses and our responses to it. For example, some of us experience an urge to go on munching on something even when we are not actually hungry. This happens when we are under stress of say an examination, stress of a professional deadline and so on. Alternatively some people may lose appetite.
Craving can be because of restlessness or anxiety. This creates panic and nervousness. To beat this strain and stress, our normal bodily response would be to gorge on food. Food may actually calm our nerves, irrespective of the fact that we may have overeaten.
It can occur because of poor eating habits. If we haven’t eaten anything for long, we may get a craving to eat food (though there may be no hunger). Sometimes, people who skip a breakfast or lunch get an urge to chew or munch onto something.
Some of us who go on strict dieting plan, starve ourselves may undergo a craving episode where we may just feel like gorging on our favourite food or any food that comes our way. The temptation to eat more may come due to a drastic step like not eating at all or drastic reduction in food intake.
Urges may crop up due to changes in climatic conditions. For example, when the weather is overcast, or if it is rainy, the climate is pleasant or chill, we may get an urge to eat certain foods.
Idleness and boredom can cause cravings. For example, the temptation to eat may be very compelling while sitting before television, just passing time somehow or when there is nothing else interesting and challenging to do.
