Nails are often a neglected part of the body and not given any importance as it is considered as just a mass of dead cells. However, well maintained and clean nails are essential for hygiene and also for neat and clean appearance of the same.
Unclean long nails accumulate lots of dirt and grime beneath them. The dirt can get transferred into our body at the time of eating food, or if we use our hands for cutting vegetables or making other food preparations, or if we are into the habit of nail biting. We can accidentally hurt our eyes or cause infection if we touch them with such nails.
Well maintained nails also do not make you feel awkward when the hands or feet are exposed to someone. Maintaining nails may consume some of your time and take extra effort. However, you can incorporate some practices in daily life that will keep your nails clean.
While bathing, soap the area around the nails and also slightly massage the nails with the body gel or soap you are using. This helps in removing the accumulated dirt around the skin of the nail and also beneath the nails. It also gives a smooth and soft texture to the nails.
You can go in for deep cleaning of nails, say on a holiday, as you may have more time. Fill up a bucket and mug with warm water and dip your feet and hands into it. Keep it on for 15-20 minutes. In the meanwhile massage the nails.
This makes the nails and the surrounding area soft and supple. Then you can slightly brush this region with a toothbrush so that the grime and dirt are completely removed. You can also rub a slice of lemon over the nails and its surrounding region. Lemon acts as an exfoliant and helps in reducing darkening of skin.
You may apply vaseline or moisture on the nails to give a shiny and smooth feel.
