Make Your Child Eat the Greens
It is true that children often want to skip their green vegetables during lunch and dinner. And it is also true that there are a lot more obese children in today’s generation than in ours. While it is true that the main reason for this is that children today play less than we did, it is also true that there is a co-relation between not eating vegetables and being obese.
Most obese children are addicted to TV and video games. And who ever eats green vegetables when doing either of these activities? It’s all potato chips and aerated drinks during TV and video games, of course. Which is very unhealthy, as could be imagined.
Parents often think children need more protein than they really do. A normal 3-year-old needs only about 15 grams of protein a day. And a single hard-boiled egg has about 6 grams. A glass of milk contributes about 8 grams. And yet parents think this is not enough, and add meat at lunch and dinner times. And with its protein, meat packs in fat, mostly saturated fat, and a big dose of cholesterol. Which is not healthy, not by any stretch of imagination.
Children can get all the protein they need from beans, nuts, eggs, and whole grains, without any of the artery-clogging fats. And they need minerals and vitamins, which they can get only from their greens.
You can get your children to eat more vegetables and less meat. You don’t have to nag, plead, reward, punish or bribe. All you have to do is cook with less meat, and more greens. And you don’t have to change your family’s food habits all at once either. You can do this a bit at a time, putting a little less meat on the plate each day, and a little more vegetables, beans, and whole grains every day. After a while, your kids will stop complaining, and you’ll all be healthier too.
