Heart of the Matter

With all the stress and the junk food we get today, our heart needs our utmost attention. A good workout and healthy eating are the key factors to keep your heart hale and hearty. Well here we are with some healthy habits that keep your ticker working the way it should.

First thing you need to do is to cut back on the consumption of red meat. No doubt some red meat in your diet ensures that you get enough iron and protein, but when it comes to your heart it is not a favourable option. So limit yourself to consuming it about two or three times a week.

It might sound strange but the second thing you need to do is to increase the consumption of dark-colored fruits and vegetables. All fruits and vegetables are good but the ones that are deepest in color contain a higher concentration of antioxidants, which beneficial for your heart.

Try and avoid “white” grain-type of foods from your diet. Potatoes, dry oats, and brown rice are all better choices than white bread, pasta and dry, cold cereal.

Rather than eating outside, make your own meals. If you make your own food, you are most likely to take better care of how much oil you have used or what kind of food you are having.

Soluble fibres are very important for a healthy heart. So increase your intake of soluble fibre foods. Beans are a terrific source of soluble fiber, as is oat bran, barley and non-sweetened oatmeal.

If you are fond of cheese, this is a bad news but you need to reduce your cheese intake. While cheese is a good source of protein and calcium, there are many other heart-healthy methods that meet these requirements with more nutritionally smart options.

Well you are fond of your daily quota of drinks but you need to keep your alcohol intake under check. Those who drink in moderation actually tend to show decreased rates of heart disease, especially when wine is the beverage of choice. Moderation here would be classified as one drink a day for women or two drinks a day for men. Not only is excessive alcohol bad but so is excessive caffeine consumption.

Last but not the least, do regular exercise. Walking or jogging is a great form of exercise for your heart.
