Handling Friend’s Disclosure of Homosexuality

Your response towards homosexuality may be designed by the influence of media, popular and common mindsets, prejudice and bias, feeling that this is unnatural, feeling of threat etc. When your friend tells you that he/she is homosexual it may come as a surprise, shock to you. That is okay. More important is how you take on things from there.
If you are perfectly okay with whatever sexual preference the friend has there may not be change or deterioration in the relationship you have, and may continue in the same manner and spirit. However, if you feel uncomfortable by it, are not okay with the concept of homosexuality, have a negative opinion about it, do not abandon the relationship.
Realize that the friend has probably taken a lot of effort and courage to speak to you, is confiding in you, does not want to keep you in the dark, is trusting you, and cares about telling you the truth despite having fears of rejection, non acceptance and other risks. So do not overreact to this situation. Do not jump to conclusions and decide about the course of the relationship immediately.
If you are unfamiliar about this, do not block your mind. Try to know about the concept, the person, their feelings, their realities by dialogue and empathy. The homosexual person is best to gain knowledge and understanding from, and will help you to get over your fears or biases.
You do not have to completely accept homosexuality and expect a sudden change in your attitude. However, you must not reject it either. Learn more about alternative sexual orientation so that your mind turns a bit receptive towards the issue.
Also the sexual preference of a person must not be of immediate consequence to you for the friendship. What the person does or does not do in their sexual life is their choice and you cannot be judgmental about it.
