Eating Disorders Among Children
Children are the new victims of fast food culture in the society. This is alarming as children need essential vitamins, minerals, proteins during their stage of growth and development. Absence and deficiency of some nutrients can retard their process of mental and physical development and have poor consequences on their health and fitness. Imbalance in diet, faulty eating habits, eating the wrong kind of food has also given rise to the problem of obesity among many children.
Food that is commonly hyped in the market like chocolates, noodles, pizza, pasta, cream rolls, cheesy spicy stuffed food catches the fascination of children and they begin relying more on these foods as it is upto their taste. The important sources of nutrition like wheat, rice, vegetables, fruits take a back seat.
Children either develop a tendency to not eat these things and compensate it with other junk food, or throw away these foods without the knowledge of parents. Therefore they will lack the strength, immunity, energy derived by eating these foods. The effects of this will be tiredness, lethargy, lack of energy or enthusiasm, pale appearance, low blood pressure, lack of stamina, easy exhaustion, poor concentration and so on.
Children also tend to munch on to junk items like wafers, chips, chocolates, cheese balls, french fries and so on. These foods are made by deep frying and contain reheated oil. It can lead to accumulation of fat in the body or may even form blockage in arteries.
Eating these foods on and off can kill their appetite for normal essential food taken during lunch or dinner. So they may end up skipping important meals just because they have overeaten some food that doesn’t even have any nutritional value.
Limiting the consumption of these foods, moderating it, observing some parental control in exposing children to junk food will go a long way in reducing their inclination and tendency to dwell on junk food and promote their health in the long run.
