Diet for Children
The diet needs of children have to be weighed and watched as they are in the stage of growth and development. Their requirements of basic minerals and vitamins have to be met as the lack of these nutrients can cause slow rate of growth, slow process of mental development, and defects caused by deficiency of these essential nutrients.
Children today are also falling prey to lifestyle induced ailments like low level of activity, couch potato culture, limited physical activities, obesity, stress due to hectic schedules, loss of energy and stamina due to exertion of school, tuitions, extra curricular activities and so on. Therefore their dietary requirements have to be understood and provided for so that they do not suffer from ailments in the present and also in the long run.
Apart from the nutrition derived from daily foods like vegetables, fruits, green leafy vegetables, whole grains, cereals, pulses etc, there are requirements that should be concentrated on. For example, children’s food must have supplements of calcium as this is the stage where their bones must develop, their height increases and bones are strengthened. So milk and milk products, peanuts, foods fortified with calcium are essential for them.
Children have to develop the muscles, body mass, improve their muscle capacity, stamina etc. Therefore foods that build muscles, help in the maintenance and repair of tissues, strengthening of tissues and ligaments should be consumed so that they can carry out day to day activities without injury or strain. Foods like soybeans, oatmeal, cornflakes, cereals and grains must be added to their diet.
Their energy requirements are high too since the level of exertion and activities they perform can get stressful, especially for children who are into sports and strenuous physical activities. They can be given foods like cashew nuts, walnuts, raisins that are high energy foods; and fruits like oranges, watermelon, bananas that contain natural sugar and are instant energizers.
Obesity is gaining predominance among children due to their tendency to gorge on deep fried foods, wafers, chips, cheesy items, burgers, noodles etc that have high levels of fat and cholesterol. Therefore these foods must be curtailed or replaced with oil free, fat free, high nutrition foods.
