Changing Perceptions on Marriage
Marriage was considered to be a given thing in life and played an important role in the life cycle of an individual. With passage of time the meaning and dimensions of marriage have changed. Many people do not consider it as a compulsion and it has become more a matter of choice rather than a given preordained thing.
Marriage is also not considered to be a relationship that arises of out ceremonies or rituals. It is more a celebration of togetherness between people with or without the completion of rituals or formalities.
Many partners live a semi-married life in the form of live in relationship, sharing home and fulfilling many of the roles arising out of marriage, without actually being married. This settlement and middle way allows couples to be bonded like in marriage, but also allows the flexibility and freedom of asserting choice and individuality.
Many more dynamics have risen in marriage; for example, the union of gays or lesbians. There has been development in such relationships but majority of the society still does not accept the idea of a marriage between people of the same sex.
The current trends in marriage also raise the question of the purpose of marriage. Earlier marriage was considered to be necessary to fulfill the role of reproduction. However, having children has now become more a matter of choice rather than a family or social compulsion as couples now a days are more proactive in making their choices rather than sticking to social norms.
Also the concept that marriage is necessary to acknowledge or provide legitimacy to sexual relations has undergone a huge shift. Many couples in relationships or even teenagers experience sexual pleasure even before marriage and to that extent the role of marriage has been minimized.
Marriage has become a more complex issue because of past relationships that may haunt the partners, risky sexual behaviour in past, extra marital relationships, homosexuals forced to enter a heterosexual marriage to avoid taboo etc.
