Causes of Poor Appetite
Poor appetite is a cause of concern as the food intake may drastically reduce and the body may not be able to perform the functions that help in keeping it healthy and fit. Loss of appetite may lead to declining intake of nutrients leading to several deficiency driven health conditions.
Due to absence of appetite and subsequent poor food intake, there may be a feeling of exhaustion, fatigue, tiredness, dullness and listlessness, weakness and dizziness, declining level of energy and stamina, and pale appearance.
Children as well as adults might experience this condition, for which several factors could be attributed. One of the reasons could be that a person naturally has low capacity for food intake and may not actually feel hungry. Therefore some supplements or tonic that helps to boost appetite may be prescribed by doctors.
It could be a result of poor eating habits. For example, a person may not eat on time, eat at odd hours, munch on chips, wafers, pastries or other junk foods due to which there may be no hunger later on. Such a person is likely to skip meals, lunch or dinner as he/she is already feeling full.
Drinking plenty of water before meals is another reason why a person may not be able to eat meals. Water does consume lot of space and gives a feeling of being full; therefore eating food may not be possible.
Stress could be another reason for lack of appetite. People who are bogged down by pressures of work, have constant worries and tension about meeting deadlines, are on a job that requires meeting targets and being on the move, may suffer from poor appetite.
Mentally disturbed individuals are known to have very low inclination towards food. For example, a person with depression tends to eat very less as there is a general feeling of low mood, frustration, disinterest, lack of enthusiasm and low concern for one’s health and well being.
People who are very conscious of their weight, feel they are obese and have a compulsive urge to cut down weight may suffer from poor appetite or may not eat even though they might be hungry.
