Breast feeding is one of the most satisfying aspects of motherhood. It is said that breast feeding helps deepen the bond between the mother and her baby. But there might be a lot of problems initially when both the mother and the baby are getting accustomed to this ritual. While breast feeding your baby, you need to take care of a few things which will ensure that your breasts are fine and your baby is also getting its daily quota of milk.
You need to avoid pressure on your breasts. If your breasts receive a lot of pressure, it can result in blocked milk ducts. So make sure you do not wear underwire bras or too tight clothes. Anything that can put pressure on your breasts like sleeping on your stomach, baby carriers and slings should be completely avoided.
You should support your breasts. And the best way to do that is by wearing a supportive normal bra or a nursing bra with breast flaps. Cotton bras are best as they will not trap moisture that can irritate your nipples. Make sure you wear a bra that fits correctly and does not squeeze your breasts.
Cleaning your breasts is very important. Your breasts should be washed with warm water at least twice every day. Usage of soap or any other cleansing agents should be avoided as they lead to drying and cracking of the nipples. Make sure you always wash your hands thoroughly for 15 seconds before breastfeeding, expressing, or pumping.
You nipples should be kept dry all the time. Let your nipples dry completely before putting on clothes. If you wear nursing pads, make sure you change them often. Wearing plastic nipple shells or plastic-lined nursing pads can cause air blockage to the breast, and hence should be avoided if possible.
Also, just before feeding your baby and right after you have fed your baby, do make sure you rub a bit of expressed milk or pure lanolin ointment on your nipples to keep them from getting chapped.
If you follow these simple tips you can enjoy this essential part of the joys of motherhood.
