Being Friends With Your Ex

Ending the relationship in a polite and humane manner may make the process of separation or break off more bearable. Partners who have been in close relationship may find it very distressing or painful to suddenly stop all contact due to break up, and move separate ways.
Some partners may also decide that though they may not like to be in a romantic relationship, they like each other’s company and should be in touch. Their otherwise healthy relationship should not suffer due to break off, and they may choose to be friends.
However, a decision like this needs to be taken more carefully as there are chances of bouncing back into the same feelings you had earlier. You may not be able to take your mind off the partner though you do not want a romantic relationship with him/her, you may feel hung up in the relationship, and may make a hasty patch up and get onboard impulsively.
To be friends in the true sense will need overcoming the underlying feelings of romantic love and affection that you once shared. Do not put the tag of friendship to a relationship when you know you feel differently.
You may choose to be in touch, but try to meet when more common friends are around. This may help you to feel less awkward and less intimate. While you are meeting separately, discuss or talk about neutral matters; avoid discussing your relationship.
Try to divert your mind from the past relationship and act, behave, talk more like friends. Do not get into emotional, serious discussions. Have a happy and fun time as friends do and leave it at that.
Do not share loving messages or memories with each other. If you do talk about the old times, talk about it in a more casual or little detached way so that you do not get emotionally carried on with it.
Be sure that you can handle the friendship, or think of other options.
