Become A Healthy Vegetarian
Most people wonder whether by following a vegetarian diet they will automatically lose weight. Well, not necessarily. There is a misconception that the vegetarian way of eating is inherently healthy because of lower-fat food choices and calorie control no matter how you eat.
The fact is that many vegetarians have a high fat intake like eggs, cream, butter, whole-milk products and cheese that contain many unnecessary calories. Vegetarian protein sources like nuts and seeds are also high in fat. However, there are ways to follow a vegetarian diet and lose weight.
Here’s how:
• Substitute fat-free milk for high-fat milk. If you use soymilk, opt for a reduced-fat, fortified soymilk to get protein and essential vitamins and minerals.
• Use cheese cautiously as both cheese from cow’s milk and cheese from soy or rice milk can be high in fat.
• Use low in fat protein sources such as legumes, tofu and tempeh. Legumes also add fiber to your diet. Nuts and seeds are also excellent sources of protein but should be taken in small portions. Eating more than a handful a day is too much.
• You can opt for fresh fruit or raw vegetables for snacks when you’re really hungry.
• Take limited quantity of snacks high in fat or sugar.
• You can use salsa, lemon juice or flavored vinegars instead of mayonnaise, butter or margarine, or sour cream for flavoring food.
• As far as possible avoid fried foods and opt for baked, broiled or steamed instead.
• Try to avoid nibbling even on low-calorie foods when you are not really hungry.
• You can get creative with low-fat vegetarian recipes to avoid monotony and boredom.
Following a vegetarian eating pattern can also help prevent some types of cancer, heart disease and high blood pressure. You just need to ensure that your vegetarian food choices aren’t overloaded with fat and sugar to really capitalize on your health and minimize your waistline.
