5 Bad Habits That Cause Kids’ Cold
Remember your granny’s advice “keep your feet warm or you will catch cold”. Well, it actually may be true. A study from the Common Cold Centre in Cardiff University in the U.K. a few years ago reported that “acute cooling of the feet” helped bring on cold symptoms in about 10 percent of healthy subjects.
One possible explanation for this maybe that when your feet get cold, your blood vessels constrict throughout your body, including those in your upper airways, and that lowers your defenses against respiratory germs.
Here are five bad habits that can lead to cold and flu among children, and how you can prevent them:
1. Dirty Hands. Getting your children to wash their hands frequently is one of the best ways to prevent colds and flu. You must wash your hands before preparing food, before touching a baby, after coughing or sneezing, after using the bathroom, after playing with pets, after being around a sick person etc. The right way to wash hands is to scrub with soap for 20 seconds or so including underneath fingernails and behind wrists, before rinsing and drying them. If you cannot access water use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
2. Not getting flu vaccine. Although there is no vaccine against the common cold most children aged 6 months and older should get a flu vaccine every year.
3. Uncovered coughing and sneezing. Educate your children to cover their mouth and nose with a tissue whenever they cough or sneeze, and then throw the tissue into the dustbin. Don’t get them too close to adults or other children (including friends) who are coughing or sneezing. When your child has cold or flu, keep him\her at home.
4. Biting nails and picking. Teach your kids to avoid biting their nails and touching or picking at their eyes, nose and mouth to limit the spread of germs.
5. Exchanging personal items. Make sure the kids don’t share used tissues, or utensils, beverage containers, toothbrushes, towels and other personal items.
Furthermore, a healthy diet and regular exercising are the foundation of good health and help in strengthening the immune system.
