10 Sleep Myths Busted

To uncover some of the common sleep myths and get a more restful slumber, Read on!

MYTH 1: Catching Up on lost sleep whenever you can is good.

FACT: The sleep you have lost on any night is lost forever and it can’t be made up. Therefore, sleeping extra hours on the weekend does more harm than good.

MYTH 2: If you can’t fall asleep, try harder!

FACT: You should not force yourself to fall asleep by doing things like counting sheep. Instead, get out of the bed and do some relaxing activities like listening to music, reading etc.

MYTH 3: Alcohol helps you sleep faster and better.

FACT: Although alcohol may make you drowsy and help you sleep faster, it leads to fragmented sleep. It can even worsen chronic insomnia.

MYTH 4: Snoring is common and harmless.

FACT: Snoring may be a symptom of sleep disorder called sleep apnea. If you snore loudly with long pauses in between, you should see a doctor.

MYTH 5: Evening workouts will help you fall asleep faster.

FACT: Exercise does help you fall asleep faster but you must finish exercising at least 3 hours before bed time to allow your body to return to normal body temperature before sleep.

MYTH 6: Old people need less sleep.

FACT: Older people need as much sleep as younger people i.e. 7-9 hours. It is just that they tend to sleep more during the day with shorter naps.

MYTH 7: Sleep is needed for brain to rest.

FACT: Sleep is needed for the body to rest and not the brain. The brain is still working and controlling bodily functions like breathing when we are asleep.

MYTH 8: Spend time in your bedroom till you are ready to fall asleep.

FACT: The more activities you associate with your bedroom, the harder it is for you to fall asleep there when you want to.

MYTH 9: Sex at night will arouse you and keep you up.

FACT: Sex helps release endorphins that relieve stress and help you fall asleep easily.

MYTH 10: Cozying up under heavy blankets will make you go to sleep faster.

FACT: Body gets into sleep mode easily when it is at a cooler temperature. Therefore, you must leave the window a little open for fresh air to come in so you don’t get too warm or too cold.
