It may sound too good to be true but the original Christmas dinner has the potential to be a brilliant nutrition-packed meal. Here are 10 christmas foods that will clear your conscience this Christmas.
1. Smoked salmon is an excellent source of omega-3 essential fatty acids, a good source of protein and contains useful amount of niacin. It is good for heart health and contains only 142 calories per 100g portion.
2. Turkey is high in protein and low in fat. It is also rich in iron, zinc, phosphorus, potassium and B vitamins. The darker meat is slightly higher in fat; a 100g portion of light meat contains just 2g of fat. You cut the amount of fat to half by removing the skin.
3. Roasted potatoes provide us with energy, potassium, and vitamins B and C. To boost their vitamin and fiber content, roast them with their skin on. Roast them with lightly sprayed olive-oil to reduce the calories.
4. Sprouts have powerful cancer-fighting ingredients, vitamins, minerals and fiber. You can have them steamed or roast them for 30-40 minutes in a little olive oil.
5. Brussels sprouts are a rich source of folate and vitamin C, and also contain vitamin B6. It helps in the metabolism of amino acids, formation of red blood cells and a healthy nervous system.
6. Red cabbage is high in calcium, which is essential for healthy bones and teeth and is a good source of folate.
7. Carrots are a rich source of beta-carotene, are high in potassium and low in calories. Steaming them and adding some fresh herbs and spices will improve their health quotient.
8. Parsnips contain about twice as much fibre as an equivalent portion of carrots. Although they contain twice the number of calories, they are still low-calorie, if you don’t add fat through roasting.
9. Mince pies are rich in minerals and some anti-oxidants but high in sugar and fat. You can make apple pies with a little mincemeat added for a change. Also to reduce the fat content go for the ones with thinner pastry and greater fruit content.
10. Christmas pudding
You can supply a fruit platter or fresh fruit salad instead of cheese cakes and flans. A yummy low-calorie christmas cake can be prepared using 2 egg whites instead of 1 egg and some pureed fruit in place of oil.
